DELAND, FL -- The University of Delaware women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season with a 6-1 setback to Stetson on Saturday evening at Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, while the men saw their five-match winning streak come to an end in a 6-1 loss to the 67th-ranked Hatters earlier in the
day.
Sophomore Elena Berry (at right) recorded a 6-4, 7-5 third-singles win over Stetson's Unnati Purushotham, but the Hens were blanked in eight other matches in falling to 6-1 on the season.
Senior No. 1 Susan Pollack suffered a 6-0, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Valentina Galbarini, while freshman Courtney Fenimore lost a nail-biter to Breanna Atkinson 1-6, 7-6 (7-2), 11-9 at second singles. Junior Amanda Campbell came up short in a 6-1, 6-0 setback to Stetson's Megan Jones. SU's Anna Leonenko cruised past Blue Hen senior Alexa Dragonette 6-0, 6-1 in fifth-singles play, and Katherine Nowicki beat freshman Ivana Petrich 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
In women's doubles play, Galabrini and Purushotham downed Pollack and Fenimore 8-2 at No. 1, Atkinson and Nowicki defeated Campbell and Dragonette 8-4 at No. 2, and Leonenko teamed with Natalie Gorham for an 8-6 victory over Berry and Petrich at the third spot.
Delaware lost its eighth in a row to Stetson (10-8, 5-3 Atlantic Sun), but the women are off to their best start since beinning the 2004-05 campaign at 7-0.
The men (6-4, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association) dropped five of six singles matches and two of three doubles contests in the loss.
Sophomore Camilo Perez scored the Blue Hens' only point of the afternoon at sixth singles, as he defeated the Hatters' Bret Feldman 6-3, 6-3. Perez came back later to post Delaware's only other win of the match, teaming with fellow sophomore Sam Barrer to defeat Trevor Bach and Peter Dzuba of Stetson 8-3 at No. 3 doubles.
In other men's matches, Stetson's Marcus Echtler topped UD sophomore Austin Longacre 6-4, 6-1 in their first-singles showdown, while Hicham Laalej made quick work of junior Nolan Greenberg, the Hens' No. 2, in a 6-3, 6-1 rout. Joey Jones defeated Barrer by a 6-2, 6-1 tally at third singles, standout freshman Chris Hincker fell to Stetson's Filip Kricka 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4, and Hatter fifth man Chris Swarteson was a 6-3, 6-4 winner over Delaware senior Jonathan Schwartz at the sixth spot.
Echtler and Kricka held off Longacre and Greenberg 8-5 in first-singles action, while Swanteson and Serguei Boulanov notched an 8-5 win of their own over Schwartz and
The Stetson men, ranked 67th nationally in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, improved to 16-4 on the season and 12-0 at home. With the win, the Hatters climbed to 10-0 all-time against the Blue Hens.
Delaware closes out its Spring Break tour of Florida with matches at Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday.
