NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware men's and women's tennis coach Laura Travis (at right) has announced the signing of five high school standouts and one transfer, all of whom will join the Blue Hens for the 2008-09 season. Andre Vorobyov of Brooklyn, NY, Courtney Scott of Ardmore, PA, Kevin Papen of Dover, DE will string up their rackets for the men next year, while the women's team welcomes Lauren Gruber of Fox Point, WI, Samantha Carnall of Hatfield, MA, and Megan Doran of Absecon, NJ, a transfer from the University of Connecticut.
Vorobyov headlines the Blue Hens' recruiting class after finishing the 2007 season ranked No. 3 in the 16-and-under age group in the United States Tennis Association's East region. Vorobyov, who attends Brooklyn Technical High School, ranked 86th nationally among 16-and-unders in 2007. As a freshman in 2004, he was rated the No. 1 14-year-old in the East region and ranked 86th nationwide.
Scott was a four-year starter at Lower Merion High School, leading the Aces to back-to-back Pennsylvania state championships at No. 1 singles and earning a state doubles title as a sophomore. Consistently ranked among the top 25 players in the USTA's Middle States region, he climbed to No. 6 in the 18-and-under division at the end of the 2007 season and achieved a No. 214 national ranking.
Papen was born and raised in Delaware and now stars for Caesar Rodney High School, where he won an individual state title at No. 1 singles as a junior in 2007.
Gruber went 35-0 at first singles last season at Whitefish Bay High School on the way to the 2007 Wisconsin Division I state individual championship. She ranked 25th among 18-and-unders in the USTA's Midwest region in 2007, when she earnd a No. 328 national ranking. She was also a three-year starter for the Whitefish Bay basketball team. Her father, David, played basketball at UD from 1978-80 and was a Blue Hen co-captain during the 1979-80 season.
Carnall has ranked among the top 30 players in the USTA's New England region since 2002, when she was rated No. 1 in the 12-and-under division. The Smith Academy student ranked 15th in the region and 218th nationally in 2007.
Doran enjoyed a successful freshman campaign at UConn in 2007-08, going 10-4 in singles play and 11-2 in doubles action for the 9-4 Huskies.
The Blue Hen women posted a 12-3 record this season, their best mark since 1997-98, and went 5-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. The men, meanwhile, went 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. Both teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
