NEWPORT NEWS, VA -- The fifth-seeded University of Delaware women's tennis team suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of No. 4 seed Georgia State on Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament, while the seventh-seeded Blue Hen men dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 2 seed William & Mary in their quarterfinal match-up.
Freshman Ivana Petrich (at right) delivered the Hens' only win of the day at sixth singles, where she beat GSU's Kiera Strickland by a 6-3, 6-1 tally. Petrich now has 20 singles victories on the season, the second-most ever by a UD freshman.
The Panthers' Dariana Kozmina was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over UD senior Susan Pollack at first singles, while freshman No. 2 Courtney Fenimore retired in the second set of a 6-0, 1-0 setback to GSU's Martina Nitkova. At fourth singles, junior Amanda Campbell came up short in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Kiara Powell.
The other two singles matches were called early because Georgia State clinched the win before they were completed.
GSU stormed to easy wins at second and third doubles to claim the first point of the day. Kozmina and Powell routed Campbell and senior Alexa Dragonette 8-1 in their second-doubles showdown, while Strickland and Rachel Malina scored an 8-2 triumph over Petrich and sophomore Elena Berry at No. 3.
Delaware (11-3, 5-0 CAA) remained winless in seven all-time appearances in the CAA quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Georgia State upped its record to 12-9 with its seventh victory in a row.
In men's action, the Tribe, ranked 63rd in the nation in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association ratings, clinched the victory quickly by securing the doubles point and winning the first three singles matches that were completed. William & Mary's Alex Cojanu cruised by UD sophomore Austin Longacre 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, while Marwan Ramadan followed suit with a 6-3, 6-2 straight-setter over junior No. 2 Nolan Greenberg. Sebastien Vidal closed out the win for the Tribe by routing Delaware senior Jonathan Schwartz 6-1, 6-2 at fifth singles.
William & Mary captured the doubles point with runaway victories at No. 2 and No. 3. Ramadan and Keziel Juneau downed UD sophomores Sam Barrer and Camilo Perez 8-1 at the second spot, while Vidal and Kavi Sud rolled to an 8-3 win over Schwartz and freshman Chris Hincker in their third-doubles match.
The men (9-7, 3-1 CAA) fell to 0-7 in CAA quarterfinal play and dropped their fifth straight meeting with the Tribe, which improved to 14-12 on the year and will meet No. 3 seed Old Dominion in Saturday's semifinals.
The UD tennis teams return to the court on Tuesday, when they close out their season at Bucknell.
