NEWARK, DE – The University of Delaware will welcome tennis legends Virginia Wade and Dick Stockton to Elkton (Md.) Indoor Tennis Courts on Saturday evening, when they will meet and play points with fans as part of an event designed to raise awareness of the UD men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Set to begin at 7:15 p.m., this special evening of tennis will give fans the chance to meet and play points with Wade and Stockton, two of the sport’s true greats.

Delaware seniors Brittany Barsky, Zach Chafitz, Alexa Dragonette, Jason Hanschmann, Susan Pollack, Julie Schiller, and Jonathan Schwartz will be honored at the event, which also features food and beverages.

Wade, a native of England, won 55 singles titles – including three Grand Slams - during her 19-year career on the International Tennis Federation Women’s Circuit. She turned pro in 1968 and took home the singles crown at the inaugural U.S. Open only a few months later, defeating Billie Jean King in the final.

Her second Slam came at the 1972 Australian Open, but Wade's most memorable win wasn’t until five years later at Wimbledon. With Queen Elizabeth II looking on, she rallied from a set down for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 triumph over Belgian Betty Stove to take home the Rosewater Dish on the tournament’s 100-year anniversary.

Wade (at right) collected three Grand Slam doubles titles in 1973, teaming with Australian Margaret Court to win the Australian Open, French Open, and U.S. Open in an eight-month span. She scored a second U.S. Open doubles victory in 1975, again partnering with Court. In 1989, Wade was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Stockton, meanwhile, reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 1974 and advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 1976 and 1977. During his 13-year professional career, the Charlottesville, Va. native ranked as high as No. 8 in the world. A five-time member of the U.S. Davis Cup team, he has eight career singles titles and 16 doubles titles to his credit, including mixed doubles crowns at the 1976 U.S. Open and the 1984 French Open.

The 1972 NCAA singles champion while at Trinity University, Stockton was named to the Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame in 1990.
