RICHMOND, VA -- The University of Delaware women's tennis team has earned the fifth seed in this week's Colonial Athletic Association Championships, where the Hens will face No. 4 seed Georgia State in a quarterfinal match-up Friday afternoon at Huntington Park Tennis Center in Newport News, VA.
The women's squad has gone 11-2 this season and posted a perfect 5-0 mark in conference play. The Hens' league wins include four 7-0 shutouts as well as victories over UNC Wilmington and James Madison, teams that Delaware had never beaten before this year.
Senior Susan Pollack (at right), the Hens' No. 1 singles player since her first day on campus, comes into the tourney with an 18-6 singles record. Her 67 career singles wins rank fourth all-time at UD. Freshman No. 2 Courtney Fenimore has also shined for Delaware, going 18-5 in her rookie campaign, while fellow freshman Ivana Petrich has posted a 19-4 record at sixth singles. Meanwhile, sophomore Elena Berry has rolled to a team-best 20-4 mark at the No. 3 slot.
In the 2007 CAA Championships, the Blue Hens toppled George Mason 4-0 in the first round before dropping a 4-0 quarterfinal decision to VCU.
Georgia State (11-9, 1-2 CAA) is led by junior Martina Nitkova, a native of the Czech Republic who has gone 10-6 at first singles and 13-7 overall this year. The Panthers, winners of six consecutive matches, will meet UD for the first time ever.
Last season, GSU advanced to the CAA semifinals, where it fell to eventual champion William & Mary.
The Blue Hens' No. 5 seed is their highest since joining the conference in 2001-02, but Delaware is 0-6 all-time in quarterfinal matches.
William & Mary earned the tournament's top seed on the strength of its 14-8 record and No. 26 national ranking. The Tribe are the defending CAA champions and have taken 19 of the last 22 conference titles.
