LEWISBURG, PA -- Sophomore Austin Longacre broke a long-standing school record for singles wins in a season and freshman Chris Hincker established a new standard for singles wins by a freshman as the University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams closed out their 2007-08 season with twin 5-2 victories over Bucknell on Tuesday afternoon.
Longacre defeated Bucknell's Ira Reibeisen by a 6-1, 6-2 tally at first singles for his 22nd victory of the year, breaking Jon Zolin's 34-year-old UD record. The men also got a second-singles win from junior Nolan Greenberg, who sped past Ryan Sandburg 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore third man Sam Barrer maintained the momentum at the third spot, where he notched a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Zach Hascoe. Hincker routed the Bison's Jonathan Brenner 6-1, 6-3 at number four to set a new UD freshman mark with 19 victories on the year.
Senior Jonathan Schwartz capped off his career with a tough 6-3, 7-5 setback to Bucknell's Mark Malloy at fifth singles. Despite the loss, Schwartz leaves the Blue Hens with 51 singles wins, tied for third on the school's all-time list, and has made an indelible impact on the program. Sophomore No. 6 Camilo Perez beat Ben Young by a 6-3, 6-1 tally to give the Hens their fifth point.
The Bison took two of three doubles matches from the Hens to earn the doubles point. Barrer and Perez notched the only UD win, as they handled Brenner and Anton Kovic in an 8-3 rout at No. 2.
The men topped Bucknell for the fifth time in the last six meetings to finish the season with a 10-7 overall record, their best since the 2004-05 campaign.
In women's action, senior Susan Pollack, one of the most decorated players in the history of Delaware tennis, dropped a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision to Bucknell's Tania Varela in the final match of her fine collegiate career. The two-time All-Colonial Athletic Association performer finished her career with 67 singles wins, fourth-most in school history, and a UD record 69 doubles victories. Just as impressive, she played every singles match of her four-year career at the No. 1 slot.
At second singles, freshman Courtney Fenimore picked up an easy 6-0, 6-2 win over Lauren Lucido, and sophomore Elena Berry (at right) surrendered just one game to Carlin Calcaterra on the way to a 6-1, 6-0 tally at No. 3. Junior Amanda Campbell shut down the Bison's Dara Dwojewski 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 in their fourth-singles meeting, while senior Alexa Dragonette ended her career on a bit of a sour note, falling to Lauren Rottkamp in a 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 marathon.
Dragonette has made a name for herself in the UD record books. She ranks sixth in Delaware history with 58 career singles wins, while her 60 doubles victories place her second all-time behind only Pollack.
Freshman No. 6 Ivana Petrich finished up her impressive rookie campaign by outclassing BU's Renee Weissend 6-1, 6-0.
Berry and Campbell posted an impressive 8-1 win over Calcaterra and Paulina Gamboa at second doubles, while Dragonette and Petrich clinched the doubles point with a 9-7 third-doubles triumph over Dwojewski and Caitlin Baffa.
With the win, the Blue Hen women ended the season at 12-3, their best record since going 17-1 in 1997.
