RICHMOND, VA -- Members of the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were well represented on the Colonial Athletic Association Mid-season Top Times List announced this week by the league office.
Delaware swimmers and divers appeared in the top 10 in seven women’s events and in eight men’s events. The top times lists are used in seeding the individual swimmers for the CAA Championships set for Feb. 14-17 at George Mason University. An updated list will be released in February.
The Blue Hens’ top rated swimmer is junior Andrew Zinn (McKean/Wilmington, DE), who ranks No. 4 in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.10. Other top 10 rated individuals for the Hens are freshman Grady Carter (Newark/Newark, DE) in the 50 freestyle (9th/21.31), senior Joe Virion (Concord/Wilmington, DE) in the 1,650 freestyle (16:52.57), sophomore John Ohlhaver (Western/Catonsville, MD) in the 100 backstroke (7th/53.83), the 200 medley relay team of Ohlhaver, freshman Matt Rathbun (Seton Hall Prep/Long Valley, NJ), Carter, and Zinn (10th/1:37/19), the 200 freestyle relay team of senior Brendan Spencer (Yorktown/Arlington, VA), junior Adam Blomberg (Kamiakin/Kennewick, WA), Ohlhaver, and Zinn (8th/1:27.36), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Ohlhaver, freshman Brad Damtoft (Irondequoit/Rochester, NY), Blomberg, and Zinn (9th/3:11.60).
In diving, Delaware sophomore Matt Abbruzzese (Bellmore/Merrick, NY) was ranked third in the three-meter (284.49 points) and fourth in the one-meter (284.90) while freshman Tom Gallagher (Sachem/Holbrook, NY) was sixth in the one-meter (237.75) and freshman Ben Blotner (Bethesda/Chevy Chase, MD) was fifth in the three-meter (271.80) and seventh in the one-meter (235.70).
For the Delaware women, sophomore Maryann Walker (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, MD - at right) was fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:07.31), sophomore Kellie Pastore (Archbishop Ryan/Philadelphia, PA) was sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.55) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.42), and sophomore Stephanie House (Sutherland/Pittsford, NY) was eighth in the 200 butterfly (2:08.92).
In the relay events, the 200 medley relay team of sophomore Emily Smathers (McKean/Newark, DE), Pastore, sophomore Sarah Begley (Conestoga/Berwyn, PA), and Walker was eighth (1:50.40), the 400 medley relay team of sophomore Brenna Davis (Academy of the New Church/Bryn Athyn, PA), Pastore, Begley, and Walker was ninth (3:59.16), and the 400 freestyle relay team of Begley, freshman Rachel Greene (Damascus/Gaithersburg, MD), senior Kendall Warren (Downingtown/Downingtown, PA), and Walker was 10th (3:35.26).
In diving, Delaware senior Sarah Bergan (Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Bethesda, MD) was second in the three-meter event (313.65), senior Emily Pretz (Haverford/Havertown, PA) was third (312.80), junior Steve Dreher (Haddonfield/Haddonfield, NJ) was fifth (280.35), and freshman Lisa Goyette (Fayetteville-Manlius/Manlius, NY) was eighth (257.60).
The Delaware women’s team currently owns a 10-1 dual meet record while the Blue Hen men are 5-4.
Both Delaware men’s and women’s teams will resume action Jan. 6 at CAA foe Towson University at 1 p.m.
