Athlete photoPISCATAWAY, NJ -- University of Delaware junior Matt Abbruzzese posted two fifth place finishes and set a school record to lead the Blue Hens at the Rutgers University Diving Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Sonny Werblin Recreation Center.

The four-team invitational meet included teams from host Rutgers, Delaware, Drexel, and The College of New Jersey.

Abbruzzese (Bellmore/Merrick, NY) led all Blue Hen divers as he placed fifth in the men’s three-meter diving event with a school record score of 335.20 points and placed fifth in the one-meter with a score of 320.80, the second highest total in Delaware history. He broke the school three-meter record of 333.90 by Ali Al-Hasen in 1993-94 and his one-meter score was second only to Al-Hasen’s record score of 323.62 that same season. Both scores also qualified Abbruzzese for the NCAA Zone A Diving meet to be held March 2-4 at Rutgers.

Also for the Delaware men, freshman Tom Gallagher was seventh in the three-meter (297.35) and eighth in the one-meter (274.25) while freshman Ben Blotner was seventh in the one-meter (286.80) and eighth in the three-meter (286.30). Rutgers’ Andre Watson captured both events with scores of 394.60 in the three-meter and 374.90 in the one-meter.

On the women’s side, Delaware senior Sarah Bergan (at right) was sixth in the one-meter with a score of 239.50 and seventh in the three-meter (266.15) while freshman Lisa Goyette was seventh in the one-meter (232.30) and eighth in the three-meter (251.65). Drexel’s Kate Hynes won both events with scores of 333.85 in the one-meter and 369.65 in the three-meter.

The Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will head to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships next week where the Blue Hens will compete Feb. 14-17 at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
