NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men’s swimming team defeated Georgetown,148-93, while the women powered past the Hoyas,160-74, in a non-league meet at Harry Rawstrom Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Andrew Zinn and Joe Virion each won two events for the Blue Hens. Zinn won the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events in 21.61 and 48.21 respectively, and also was a part of the winning 400 yard freestyle relay team. Virion captured the 500 and 1000 yard freestyle events in 4:57.32 and 10:10.80. Levan Berizde won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.08, Branden Spencer won the 200 individual medley in 2:02.10 and Adam Blomberg won the 200 butterfly in 1:58.30. Matthew Abbruzzese won the 3 meter diving competition with 249.64 points.
The 400 yard medley relay featuring Spencer, Mark Erdozy, James Lavendar and Beridze also won its event with a time of 3:39.66. In addition, the team of Zinn, Spencer, Blomberg and Berizde captured the 400 yard freestyle relay in 3:16.83.
On the women’s side, Meredith Law and Ellen Heinz (right) were double winners for the Blue Hens. Law won the 500 and 100 yard freestyle events in 5:13.39 and 10:46.42 respectively. Heinz wond the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events in 54.40 and 1:57.37. Alyson Oliver also won two events, winning one meter diving with 241.50 points and taking the three meter competition with 235.43 points.
Sarah Begley won the 50 yard freestyle in 25.37, Michelle Stephens took the 200 yard individual medley in 2:14.05, Stephanie House won the 200 butterfly in 2:11.78 and Emily Smathers won the 200 backstroke in 2:10.57 for the Hens.
The 400 yard medley relay team of Emily Watts, Lauren Southard, Begley and Maryann Walker won its event in a time of 4:01.75.
Both teams will return to action next Friday and Saturday with a combined meet at Old Dominion with Northeastern and William and Mary. The meet will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday and will continue at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
