  Oliver, Begley Take Thirds, Smathers Sets School Record in 100 Backstroke for Delaware Women at CAA Championships

Athlete photoFAIRFAX, VA -- Alyson Oliver and Sarah Begley each took third place finishes for the University of Delaware women and Levan Beridze had two fifth place finishes for the Blue Hen men during the third day of the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at George Mason University’s Jim McKay Natatorium.

The Blue Hen women moved up to sixth place in the team standings with 245 points while the Delaware men slipped to ninth place with 135.5 points. The UNC Wilmington men and women continue to lead in the team standings with the Seahawk men looking to win their fifth straight team title. The fourth and final day of the meet will get underway on Saturday with preliminaries starting at noon.

In the men’s standings, UNCW was followed by George Mason, Old Dominion, James Madison, William & Mary, Davidson, Drexel, Towson, Delaware, and Charleston. On the women’s side, UNCW was followed by four-time defending champion George Mason, William & Mary, James Madison, Northeastern, Delaware, Towson, Davidson, Charleston, Drexel, and Old Dominion.

Oliver, who placed seventh in the three-meter diving event Wednesday, posted her second top 10 finish as she placed third in the one-meter event with 248.75 points. Begley placed third in the 100 butterfly with the third best time in school history at 56.98 and also teamed with Lauren Southard, Ellen Heinz, and Kendall Warren to place eighth in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:38.34, the fourth best time in school history.

Beridze led the Delaware men as he swam to a time of 1:42.48 to place fourth in the 200 freestyle finals and then joined Adam Blomberg, James Lavender, and Andrew Zinn to place fifth in the 200 freestyle in 1:25.17. Beridze’s time of 1:41.91 in the 200 freestyle trials was the second best time in school history.

Also for the UD women, Southard was fifth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.43 (time of 1:05.13 in trials was No. 2 all-time at Delaware), Emily Smathers (at right) was seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.79 and set a school record in the event with a time of 58.62 in the trials, Emily Watts was eighth in the 100 backstroke (59.69), Maryann Walker was eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.03), Kellie Pastore was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.44), and Meredith Law was 10th in the 400 individual medley (4:35.64) with the No. 3 time in school history.

Also for the Delaware men, Brendan Spencer placed 15th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.91. His time of 53.61 in the trials was the No. 3 time in school history.
