LEWISBURG, PA -- The University of Delaware women won five events and the Blue Hen men captured two events but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Hens were swept by host Bucknell University in a non-league swimming and diving meet Friday night.
The action was the final dual meet of the season for the Blue Hens, who will next compete at the Colonial Athletic Association championships Feb. 22-25 at George Mason University.
The Delaware women (11-2) had a nine-meet winning streak snapped with a 141-102 loss to the Bison while the Blue Hen men fell to 4-8 on the season with a 171-70 setback to Bucknell.
The Blue Hens won five women’s events as Shannon Burke (Shelton/Shelton, CT) won the one-meter diving event with 225.90 points, Kellie Pastore (Archbishop Ryan/Philadelphia, PA) won the 200 breaststroke with the second fastest time in school\ history (2:22.80), Ellen Heinz (Henderson/West Chester, PA - at right) won the 500 freestyle (5:09.23), Sarah Begley (Conestoga/Berwyn, PA), Maryann Walker (Mt. Hebron/Ellicott City, MD), Kendall Warren (Downingtown/Downingtown, PA), and Heinz teamed to win the 800 freestyle relay (7:49.50), and Walker, Lauren Southard (Watkins Mill/Montgomery Village, MD), Begley, and Warren teamed to capture the 400 medley relay (3:57.79).
On the men’s side, Levin Beridze (Princeton, NJ/Tbilisi, Georgia) captured the 50 freestyle (47.68), teamed with Adam Blomberg (Kamiakin/Kennewick, WA), Ulik Sokolov (Ranney School/Leonardo, NJ), and Brendan Spencer (Yorktown/Arlington, VA) to win the 800 freestyle in 7:10.07, and placed second in the 200 freestyle (21.90).
Also for the UD women, Burke was second in the three-meter dive (207.97), Heinz was second in the 200 freestyle (1:56.08), Warren was second in the 100 freestyle (54.07), and Southard was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.89) with the third fastest time in school history.
Also for the Delaware men, Matt Abbruzzese was second in both the one-meter (250.79) and three-meter (237.67) diving events, Blomberg was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:01.64), and Garrett Arant was second in both the 200 backstroke (1:59.00) and 800 freestyle relay (7:27.94).
For Bucknell, Lectie Altman won both the women’s 200 freestyle (1:55.0) and 200 backstroke (2:03.74) while Rebecca Scheffter captured both the women’s 50 freestyle (24.56) and 100 freestyle (53.32). For the Bucknell men, Todd Bauer won both the 200 freestyle (1:44.51) and 500 freestyle (4:44.40).
