Wins Four Events But Blue Hens Drop Final
Dual to Yale, 175-123
NEWARK,
DE (February 12, 2005) -- Sara Stephens
won four events and Meredith Law captured
three first place finishes but it wasn't
enough as the University of Delaware
women's swimming and diving squad fell to
Yale 175-123 in the final dual meet of the
season Saturday at Rawstrom Natatorium.
In
the men's race, Yale captured every first
place finish on the way to a 213-77 win
over the Blue Hen men. The Yale men
improved to 7-5 while the women upped
their dual meet mark to 9-3. The Delaware
women, who have now posted 10 winning
seasons in the last 11 years, finished at
6-4 while the UD men dropped to 1-9. The
meet marked the first time in school
history that the Blue Hens have faced Yale
in swimming.
Both
Delaware men's and women's teams will next
compete at the Colonial Athletic
Association championships Feb. 23-26 at
George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
Stephens
won the 200 butterfly (2:07.68), 100
butterfly (57.39), and 200 individual
medley (2:10.99) and teamed with Sara
Reed, Kendall Warren, and Law to win the
400 freestyle relay in 3:46.65. Law also
captured the 500 freestyle (5:06.90) and
1,000 freestyle (10:30.72), and placed
third in the 50 freestyle
(25.49).
Although
the Delaware men did not win any races,
the Blue Hens did post six second place
finishes. David Hardie was second in the
200 individual medley (2:05.95), Adam
Blomberg was second in the 100 butterfly
(54.20), Kyle Gurkovich was second in the
500 freestyle (4:59.70), Matt Kates was
second in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.78),
Andrew Zinn was second in the 50 freestyle
(22.02), and Blomberg and Zinn teamed with
Michael Rasch and Max Evers for a second
place showing in the 400 freestyle relay
in 3:17.59.
Also
for the UD women, Sarah Bergan was second
in the one-meter dive (231.15), Ellen
Heinz was second in the 200 freestyle
(1:57.24) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.90)
and third in the 100 freestyle (55.11) and
200 medley relay (1:55.23), and Reed also
posted a third place finish in both the
200 backstroke (2:11.17) and 500 freestyle
(5:18.46).
For
the Yale women, Moira McCracken won the
200 medley relay, 100 freestyle, and 200
freestyle, Holly Mazar won the 100 and 200
breaststroke events, and Melanie Loftus
won both diving events. For the Yale men,
Kieran Locke won the 200 medley relay, 200
backstroke, and 100 backstroke, Matt
Thunell won the 200 medley relay and 50
freestyle, and Quinn Fitzgerald captured
the 200 butterfly and 100 freestyle.
