LEWISBURG,
PA - University of Delaware senior field
hockey All-American Leah Geib and senior
swimming record-holder Sara Stephens
(right) have been named to the College
Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA)/ESPN The Magazine District 2
Women's At-Large Academic Team.
Geib, a
communications major from Schwenksville,
PA (Souderton HS), earned first team
honors for the second straight year while
Stephens, an elementary education major
from Wilmington, DE (St. Mark's HS), was
named to the second team. The 10 members
of the first team are now eligible for the
national Academic All-American team.
To be
eligible for the honor, student-athletes
must carry a 3.2 or better cumulative
grade point index and be a starter or key
reserve for their respective teams.
District 2 includes all NCAA Division I
schools in New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Maryland, West Virginia, and the
District of Columbia. The at-large team
includes athletes from all women's sports
other than soccer, volleyball, basketball,
softball, cross country, and track and
field.
Geib was a
four-year starter for the
nationally-ranked Delaware field hockey
squad under head coach Carol Miller,
leading the squad to a four-year mark of
52-32, including a record of 15-7 in 2004
when the Blue Hens captured the Colonial
Athletic Association title and advanced to
the NCAA Tournament for the first time
since 1988. She earned all-conference
honors all four years, was a three-time
all-region selection, and earned second
team STX/National Field Hockey Coaches
Association All-American honors in 2004.
She was fourth on the team in scoring with
21 points on seven goals and seven assists
while serving as team co-captain.
She
started 83 of 84 career games and scored
24 goals and dished 20 assists. She holds
the UD record for career games played and
ranked No. 5 all-time in assists and No.
14 all-time in points scored. A
communications major with a 3.929 grade
point index, Geib twice was named the CAA
Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field
hockey and was also a member of the NFHCA
National Academic team.
Stephens
was a four-year standout in several events
for the Blue Hens for head coach John
Hayman and led the team to 29 dual meet
victories during that span. A two-year
captain, she set five school records
during her career, including individual
marks in the 100 butterfly (56.04) and 200
butterfly (2:03.26) and the No. 2 all-time
fastest times in three other events. She
posted 18 top five finishes at the CAA
Championships during her career, including
winning the 200 butterfly title in 2005
and the 400 medley relay title in
2004.
An
elementary education major with a 3.78
gpa, Stephens was a four-time member of
the CAA Academic Honor Roll and was
selected as the 2004 CAA Scholar-Athlete
of the Year for women's
swimming.
Delaware,
Towson, Penn State, and West Virginia were
the only schools to place more than one
student-athlete on the two teams. Of the
10 first team recipients, four carry a
perfect 4.0 gpa while four others carry a
