NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware women's
swimming team got three victories from
four different swimmers to down Loyola
162-81 but the Greyhound men posted a
132-107 win as the two teams split their
non-league swimming and diving meet
Saturday at Rawstrom Natatorium.
Sara
Reed (right), Michelle Stephens, Ellen
Heinz, and Meredith Law each had a hand in
three victories as the Blue Hen women
improved to 6-3 with their second straight
victory. The Hens downed Loyola (2-2) for
the 12th straight time without a loss.
Dan
O'Connell won both diving events to lead
the Delaware men, but the Blue Hens lost
their eighth straight meet to fall to 1-8
on the season. The Greyhounds improved to
3-1 as Marko Turcinov and Ryan Reeser each
won three events. Loyola, which had lost
15 straight meetings to the Blue Hens,
downed Delaware for the first time since
1942-43.
Both
Delaware teams will close out the regular
season Feb. 12 when they host Yale. The
Colonial Athletic Association
championships will be held Feb. 23-26 at
George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
Reed
won the 200 freestyle (1:59.63) and 200
backstroke (2:12.01) and teamed with Law,
Kim Gravatt, and Heinz to win the 400
freestyle relay in a time of 3:43.00.
Stephens, swimming in just her second meet
for the Hens after transferring from the
University of Tennessee, captured the 200
individual medley (2:17.76) and 200
breaststroke (2:32.86) and swam a leg of
the winning 400 medley relay (4:07.87)
while Law also won the 500 freestyle
(5:18.85) and 1,000 freestyle (10:40.59),
and Heinz captured both the 50 freestyle
(25.71) and 100 freestyle
(55.04).
Also
for the Hens, Sarah Bergan won the
one-meter diving event with 191.33 points
and was second in the three-meter event
(200.18), Kendall Warren won the 400
medley relay and was second in both the
100 freestyle (56.07) and 200 freestyle
(25.81), and Sara Stephens won the 400
medley relay and was second in the 200
individual medley (2:17.94).
O'Connell,
a sophomore, led the way for the Hens as
he captured first place in both the
one-meter dive (161.10) and three-meter
dive (178.65). Also taking first place for
the Hens was Joe Virion, who won the 1,000
freestyle (10:04.50) and was second in the
500 freestyle (4:56.05).
Also
for the UD men, Jeff Falini was second in
the one-meter dive (124.88) and
three-meter dive (123.30), Adam Blomberg
was second in the 400 freestyle relay
(3:19.33), 200 freestyle (1:47.15), and
200 butterfly (2:01.61), Andrew Zinn was
second in the 400 freestyle relay and 50
freestyle (22.13), and Brendan Spencer was
second in the 400 medley relay (3:47.30),
200 individual medley (2:03.93), and 200
backstroke (2:02.63).
