DE -- University of Delaware senior Sara
Stephens (right) captured three first
place finishes and the Blue Hens won the
800 freestyle relay in the final event of
the day to post a 123-120 Colonial
Athletic Association women's swimming
victory over James Madison University
Sunday afternoon at Rawstrom
Pool.
In
the men's meet, four different Blue Hen
swimmers won two events but Delaware
dropped a 130.5-106.5 verdict to James
Madison at Rawstrom Pool. The Delaware
women improved to 5-3 (2-2 CAA) while the
Blue Hen men dropped their seventh
straight dual meet to fall to 1-7 (0-6).
The James Madison women fell to 1-5 (0-4
CAA) while the Dukes men improved to 3-3
(2-2 CAA).
Stephens,
a senior from Wilmington, DE (St. Mark's
HS), captured the 200 individual medley
(2:10.60), the 200 butterfly (2:10.46),
and the 200 breaststroke (2:24.91) to lead
the Blue Hens. The Hens clinched the meet
when the 800 freestyle relay team of
Meredith Law
(Nansemond-Suffolk/Chesapeake, VA), Sara
Reed (West Chester, PA East/East
Greenwich, CT), Kendall Warren
(Downingtown/Downingtown, PA), and Ellen
Heinz (Henderson/West Chester, PA) won
easily in a time of 7:58.56, downing James
Madison by over 13 seconds.
In
addition to Stephens winning three events,
also winning multiple events for the UD
women were Law, who also captured the 500
freestyle (5:15.15) and 1,000 freestyle
(10:41.80) and Reed also won the 200
backstroke (2:10.55). Delaware's other
first place finish was put in by Sarah
Bergan (Bethesda-Chevy Chase/Bethesda, MD)
who won the three-meter diving event with
a score of 211.28. Heinz also placed
second in the 100 freestyle (54.40) and
200 freestyle (1:56.23).
For
the Delaware men, Brendan Spencer
(Yorktown/Arlington, VA) captured both the
200 individual medley (2:01.44) and 200
butterfly (2:00.76), Adam Blomberg
(Kamiiakin/Kennewick, WA) won the 500
freestyle (4:50.89), swam a leg of the
winning 800 freestyle relay (7:11.81), and
was second in the 1,000 freestyle
(10:16.87), Levan Beridze (Princeton,
NJ/Tbilisi, Georgia) won the 800 freestyle
relay and 100 freestyle (48.17), and Joe
Virion (Concord/Wilmington, DE) won the
800 freestyle relay and the 200 freestyle
(1:48.53) and placed second in the 500
freestyle (4:53.22).
The
James Madison women were led by Allison
Keel, who captured both the 200 freestyle
and 100 freestyle. The Dukes men were led
by Brian Freitag, who won the 1,000
freestyle and 200 breaststroke, Josh
Fowler won the 200 backstroke and swam a
leg of the winning 400 medley relay, and
Kyle Knott won both the one-meter and
three-meter diving events.
Delaware
will take two weeks off and return to
action Jan. 22 when they Loyola at
Rawstrom Pool.
