WASHINGTON,
DC -- The University of Delaware men's and
women's swimming and diving teams opened
the 2004-05 season by sweeping host
Georgetown Wednesday evening.
Delaware
freshman Adam Blomberg won the 200 and 500
freestyle events and swam a leg of the
winning 200 freestyle relay team and
sophomore Dan O'Connell swept both diving
events to lead the Blue Hen men (1-0) to a
139-102 win. The Hens, looking to improve
upon last season's 2-7 dual meet record,
downed the Hoyas for the second straight
season.
Blue Hen
senior Sara Stephens led the women to a
141.5-101.5 victory as she captured the
100 butterfly and 200 individual medley
and swam a leg of the first place 200
medley relay team. The Blue Hens, who
posted an 8-1 dual record a year ago, won
their sixth straight dual meet since last
season.
The
Delaware men captured eight first place
finishes. In addition to the multiple
victories by Blomberg and O'Connell,
Rutgers transfer Levan Beridze won the 100
freestyle and swam a leg of the winning
200 freestyle relay, Troy Sattgast won the
100 butterfly, and Joe Virion was the
winner in the 1,000 freestyle. Andrew Zinn
and Max Evers also swam legs of the
winning 200 freestyle team.
The
Delaware women took home seven first place
finishes. In addition to Stephens' three
wins, Kristen Avioli won the 100
backstroke and swam a leg of the winning
200 medley relay team, Ellen Heinz won the
100 freestyle and was a member of the 200
medley relay team, and Meredith Law won
the 1,000 freestyle and swam the first leg
of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.
