Women Remain in 10th at CAA Championships;
Stephens Places Third in 200

VA -- Both the University of Delaware
men's and women's swimming and diving
teams remained in 10th place after the
second day of the Colonial Athletic
Association Championships Thursday at
George Mason University's Jim McKay
Natatorium.
The Towson
women and the George Mason men each moved
into first place in their respective meets
heading into Friday's third round.
Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. followed by
the finals at 6 p.m. Final events include
the men's and women's 400-individual
medley, 100-butterfly, 200-freestyle,
100-breaststroke, 100-backstroke and
200-freestyle relay. Finals will also be
held in the women's one-meter diving
event. The championship concludes
Saturday. The George Mason women and UNC
Wilmington men are the defending team
champions.
Senior
Sara Stephens (right) was Delaware's top
finisher for the day as she placed third
in the 200 individual medley with a
career-best time of 2:06.88. She also
placed third in the event last season at
the CAA championships. Also for the UD
women on Thursday, Meredith Law placed
ninth in the 500 freestyle with a
career-best time of 5:04.17 and Ellen
Heinz was 15th in the 500 freestyle with a
time of 5:08.56. Delaware's 400 medley
relay team was disqualified.
For the
Delaware men, the 400 medley relay team of
Brendan Spencer, David Hardie, Adam
Blomberg, and Andrew Zinn placed 10th with
a time of 3:37.99. Delaware's top
individual finish was a 19th place
performance by Levan Beridze in the 50
freestyle (21.81).
Towson
jumped in front of George Mason to take
the lead on the women's side with 227
total points. The Patriots slipped to
second place with 223 points followed by
UNC Wilmington (191), William & Mary
(164), James Madison (141), Davidson
(116), College of Charleston (97), Old
Dominion (90), Drexel (83) and Delaware
(64).
George
Mason's men's team fought back from a
fourth place standing after Thursday's
competition to take the lead with 245
total points. UNC Wilmington slipped to
second place with 239 points followed by
Old Dominion (203.50), Towson (149.50),
Drexel (137), James Madison (118), William
& Mary (117), Davidson (92), College
of Charleston (81) and Delaware (42).
Meet
highlights on Thursday included the George
Mason men taking the top three spots in
the 200 individual medley; Towson's
Jennifer Irby won the 50 freestyle in a
meet record time of 22.75; and UNC
Wilmington's Dean Berman registered a CAA
meet record of 357.65 points on the
one-meter diving platform.
