February 21, 2004 Blue Hen Women Finish Fifth in Team Standings; Peffer Named Outstanding Swimmer of Meet, Becomes NCAA Provisional Qualifier in 1,650 Freestyle
The George Mason women and the UNC Wilmington men each won their respective team titles for the third straight year. The Patriot women earned 573 points to outdistance runner-up UNC Wilmington (536), Davidson (497), Towson (412), Delaware (354), Old Dominion (330), William & Mary (309), James Madison (281), Drexel (198), and College of Charleston (111). On the men's side, UNC Wilmington won with a total of 668.5 points to get past runner-up George Mason (567.5), James Madison (522.5), Towson (404), William & Mary (334), Old Dominion (331), Drexel (295.5), Davidson (212), College of Charleston (135), and Delaware (134). Peffer, a senior from Newark, DE (Newark HS), was named the women's meet Outstanding Swimmer as she capped an outstanding four days by winning the 1,650 freestyle with a meet and school record time of 16:45.07. Peffer, who won three events at last year's championships, did even better in 2004 as she won five conference titles and set four school records and two meet records in the process. Peffer's time in Saturday's 1,650 freestyle was good enough to make Peffer a provisional qualifier for the NCAA Championships to be held March 18-20 at Texas A&M. Should she be selected to compete, she would become the first swimmer in UD history to qualify for the NCAA championships. Towson's Aaron Krause was named men's Outstanding Swimmer, Anthony Perry of Drexel was named men's Outstanding Diver, UNC Wilmington's Dave Allen was named men's Swimming Coach of the Year, and Drexel's Larry May was named men's Diving Coach of the Year. Krause won five events during the meet while Perry was the winner in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. In addition to Peffer on the women's side, George Mason's Jamie Downing was named Diver of the Year, Davidson's Tim Kelly was named Swimming Coach of the Year, and George Mason's Larry McDonald was named Diving Coach of the Year. Downing won the three-meter event and place second in the one-meter. The Delaware women set two school records on the night. In addition to Peffer in the 1,650 freestyle, Jill Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) placed second in the 100 freestyle with a UD record time of 52.24 (old mark 52.78 by Nancy Davis in 1997). Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) was second in the 200 butterfly (2:06.00), Meredith Law was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:35.36), the 400 freestyle relay team of Stephens, Law, Peffer, and Fitzgerald was seventh (3:36.82), Lauren Ostroski was ninth in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.77), and Sara Reed was ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:08.16). For the Delaware men, freshman Steve Henn was ninth in the three-meter diving event with a score of 336.10 points, the 400 freestyle relay team of Michael Rasch, Alex Skacel, Adam Goldstein, and David Hardy was 10th (3:20.50), Joe Virion was 12th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:37.93), Goldstein was 13th in the 1,650 freestyle (16:39.36), and Dan O'Connell was 13th in the three-meter dive (292.15).
