Van Deusen Third in Two Events; Fails to Qualify for NCAA's

BUFFALO, NY -- University of Delaware senior diver Julie Van Deusen closed out her Blue Hen career by placing third in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships Friday and Saturday at the University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena Natatorium.

Van Deusen, a senior from Bear, DE (Glasgow HS/Hill School, Pa.), placed third in the three-meter event with a point total of 438.20 on Friday and followed with a third place finish in the one-meter with a total of 498.30 on Saturday. Despite her two top three finishes, she was not one of the four divers selected to advance to the NCAA Championships March 20-22 at Auburn.

Van Deusen, the two-time Colonial Athletic Association Diver of the Year, became the first diver in Blue Hen history to qualify for the NCAA Championships last season when she placed 32nd in the one-meter and 35th in the three-meter at the University of Texas. She advanced after placing third in the three-meter and eighth in the one-meter at the NCAA Zone Diving championships at Navy.

Penn State's Lisa Silvestri won the three-meter competition with 454.85 points, outdistancing runner-up Melissa Kull of Connecticut who posted 442.55 points. Mary Campioli of George Mason won the one-meter title with 512 points, besting runner-up Melanie Loftus of Yale who had 509.90 points. Campioli also captured the platform competition with a score of 364.80, finishing ahead of Adela Gavozdea of Northeastern (360.35) and Teresa Herrmann of Columbia (332.70). Van Deusen did not compete in the platform competition.

Silvestri, Kull, Campioli, and Northeastern's Adela Gavozdea qualified for the NCAA Championships.

In the men's competition, Anthony Perry of Drexel won the three-meter with 550.95 points, Mike Alderman of Penn State was the winner in the one-meter event with a score of 602.00 points, and Dennis Nemtsanov of Pittsburgh won the platform with 458.80 points. Delaware did not have a men's participant.
