November 23, 2002 Blue Hen Women Win Fourth Straight Meet as Van Deusen Sweeps Again NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware diver Julie Van Deusen remained undefeated on the boards this season, capturing both the one-meter and three-meter events with record setting scores, to lead the Blue Hen women's swimming and diving team to a 1154-83 non-league victory over Rider in UD's home opener Saturday at Harry Rawstrom Pool.
The University of Delaware men captured three first place finishes but it wasn't enough as Rider (4-2) posted a 150.5-86.5 victory over the Blue Hens. The Delaware women (4-1) won their fourth straight meet, dropping Rider to 3-4, while the Blue Hen men (0-4) remained winless on the season. Delaware will have off until Dec. 6 when the Hens host Lehigh and LaSalle as part of the University of Delaware Invitational. Van Deusen, who became Delaware's first-ever NCAA Championship meet qualifier last season, posted a score of 272.32 on the one-meter board and 316.35 on the three-meter board. She broke her own record in the one-meter and bettered the mark of Tanya Mainville (1997-98) on the three-meter. The UD women picked up nine first place finishes as the 400 freestyle relay team of Megan Marshall, Sara Cierski, Lindsay Dellavalle, and Chrissy Kapelewski won in 3:46.18, Sara Peffer captured the 500 freestyle (5:11.38), Sara Stephens won the 200 butterfly (2:11.23), Sandy Stephens won the 200 individual medley (2:09.81), Jill Fitzgerald won the 100 freestyle (54.68), the 400 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli, Sandy Stephens, Sara Stephens, and Fitzgerald won in 3:59.60, Kapelewski won the 200 freestyle (1:59.39), and Meghan Petry captured the 1,000 freestyle (10:35.23). Peffer also had two second place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:00.29) and 200 butterfly (2:14.56). In the mens' meet, Delaware captured three first place finishes as the 400 freestyle relay team of Alex Skacel, Kevin Weisser, Jeff Shields, and Colin Gibson won in 3:19.84; Jacob Yohe captured the 50 freestyle (22.70), and Weisser won the 500 freestyle (4:48.51). Tim Wasiewski added three second place finishes in the 200 individual medley (2:01.23), 200 breaststroke (2:14.20), and 400 medley relay (3:39.72).
