Deusen Sweeps to Start Season
FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of
Delaware men's and women's swimming teams opened the 2002-03
season with a dual meet at George Mason on Friday. However,
the Patriots spoiled the opener, winning the men's meet,
155-81, and the women's meet, 135-106.
Delaware junior Sandy Stephens won
the 200 individual medley and 200 breaststroke on opening
night. The Newark, DE native and St. Mark's grad just missed
her own record in the 200 breaststroke, finishing in
2:23.14. She was also a member of the winning 400 medley
relay team.
Julie Van Deusen, a senior from
Bear, DE who qualified for the NCAA Championships last year,
got the new season off to a good start as she won both of
the women's diving events, setting a school record with a
score of 306.07 points in the three-meter event.
On the men's side, Kevin Weisser
won the 500 freestyle. The senior from Murrysville, PA
finished wiith a time of 4:49.23, just two-hundreaths of a
second ahead of George Mason's Eric Stehle.
Delaware will be back in action Saturday
in Washington, DC, taking on Georgetown
University.
