Van Deusen, Peffer Lead Blue Hens to Split

  

Julie Van Deusen won both diving events to remain undefeated on the season

BINGHAMTON, NY- Julie Van Deusen remained undefeated on the season in diving as she captured both the one-meter and three-meter events to lead the University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team to a split in a three-way meet vs. Lafayette and host Binghamton Wednesday afternoon at West Gymnasium.

On the men's side, Delaware was swept by both Lafayette and Binghamton despite a big effort from Tim Wasiewski who placed second in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.68) and swam a leg of the third place 400 medley relay.

The Delaware women (6-3) defeated Lafayette 164-69 but fell to Binghamton 117-113. The Blue Hen men (1-7) fell to Lafayette 160-62 and to Binghamton 146-84.

Both Delaware teams will continue action this Saturday, Feb. 1 when they travel to Colonial Athletic Association foe James Madison in Harrisonburg, VA.

The Delaware women captured three first place finishes as Van Deusen, a 2002 NCAA championships qualifier, won both diving events and Sarah Peffer captured the 1,000 freestyle (10:34.58). Peffer also added second place finishes in both the 400 individual medley (4:39.23) and 500 freestyle (5:11.94).

Also for the UD women, Lindsay Mathers was second in the 200 breaststroke ( (2:33.50), Sandy Stephens was second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:43.17), 400 medley relay (3:59.04), and 200 freestyle (1:58.99), Sara Stephens was second in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 butterfly (2:11.81), Jill Fitzgerald was second in the 50 freestyle (25.38), 100 freestyle (54.81), and 400 medley relay, and Meghan Petry was second in the 1,000 freestyle (10:38.41).

Also for the UD men, Alex Skacel was third in the 400 medley relay (3:43.60) and 200 backstroke (2:00.02) and Kevin Weisser was second in both the 500 freestyle (4:55.34) and 400 freestyle relay (3:22.45).
