October 20, 2001 Hens Wins Four Events But Fall to Richmond
NEWARK, DE - Junior Julie Van Deusen won both diving events and Meghan Petry and Sara Stephens were also winners but it wasn't enough as the University of Richmond defeated the University of Delaware in a non-league women's swimming and diving meet Saturday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium. Mary Adams and Elizabeth Cook combined for seven victories as Richmond (1-0) was victorious in its 2001-2002 season opener. Delaware fell to 1-1 despite winning four events on the day. Van Deusen, a native of Bear, DE and a transfer from Syracuse University, won the one-meter diving event with a score of 236.77 points and followed with a first place finish in the three-meter event with a score of 258.60. She is now 4-0 in diving events this season. Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ), who set six school records a year ago as a freshman, captured the 200 butterfly event with a time of 2:10.74 and placed second in the 1,000 meter freestyle (10:29.35). Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) won the 100 butterfly in 59.62 and placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:16.44). Also placing second for the Hens were Jen Haus (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.19), Kristin Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA) in the 100 backstroke (1:01.36), Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.75) and 200 breaststroke (2:29.50), Andrea Rossi (Muhlenberg/Reading, PA) in the 50 freestyle (25.52) and 100 freestyle (55.37), and Kim Fields (Severna Park/Severna Park, MD) in the 200 backstroke (2:12.20). For Richmond, Adams won four events, swimming a leg of the winning 200 medley relay and capturing the 100 backstroke, 200 breaststroke, and 500 freestyle events. Cook won the 200 backstroke, 200 individual medley, and swimming a leg of the 400 freestyle relay. The Delaware men (1-0) and women will return to action Oct. 27 at West Chester. AGATE: Richmond def.
