 Petry Picks Up Where She Left Off, Winning Two Events as
Blue Hens Win Season Debut

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2001-2002 seasons with a strong showing as the Blue Hens swept visiting Howard in a non-league meet at Rawstrom Natatorium Wednesday afternoon.

The Delaware men (1-0) posted a 158-58 victory while the Blue Hen women (1-0) posted a 169-50 victory.

On the women's side, sophomore Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) picked up where she left off last season with another solid effort. Petry, who set six school records and won the ECAC Eastern title in the 1,650 freestyle as a freshman, won two events Wednesday as she captured the 200 freestyle (2:00.28) and the 200 butterfly (2:11.93). Also winning two events for the Blue Hens was junior transfer Julie Van Deusen (Bear, DE) who captured both one-meter diving events, and freshman Andrea Rossi, who won the 50 freestyle (25.93), 100 freestyle (55.00), and swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay.

Other Delaware winners were the 400 medley relay team of freshman Kristen Aveoli, sophomore Sandy Stephens, freshman Ashley Husich, and Rossi (4:06.43), sophomore Erin Colbert in the 1,000 freestyle (10:57.56), Rossi in the 50 freestyle (25.93), freshman Sara Stephens in the 200 individual medley (2:14.83), freshman Kim Fields in the 200 backstroke (2:14.02), and freshman Aidan Hausmann in the 500 freestyle (5:21.51).

In the men's meet, junior Rick Dressel (McKean/Wilmington, DE) had a hand three victories and senior Bryan Kahner (Jericho/Jericho, NY) won twice. Dressel captured the 50 freestyle in 22.65, the 200 butterfly in 2:05.64, and swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay team (4:03.79) while Kahner won the 200 freestyle (1:48.83) and 500 freestyle (5:05.44).

Also picking up wins for the UD men were Nick Grossman in the 1,000 freestyle (10:36.17), Tim Wasiewski in the 200 individual medley (2:04.62), Kevin Weisser in the 100 freestyle (50.96), Lavar Larks in the one-meter optional dive (254.25 points), and Adam Keim in the one-meter required diving event (156.53 points).

The UD women return to action Oct. 20 at home vs. Richmond while the men return to action Oct. 27 at West Chester.
