Day One Results March 1, 2002 University of Delaware Van Deusen Places Third in 3-Meter; Larks Sixth in 1-Meter for Blue Hens
NEWARK, DE -- University of Delaware junior Julie Van Deusen placed third in the women's three-meter diving event and junior Lavar Larks placed sixth in the men's one-meter event at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Diving Championships held at the University of Delaware's Harry Rawstrom Natatorium Friday afternoon. The second and final day of the event gets under way Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with the women's one-meter event and the men's three-meter event. Delaware is hosting the championships for the first time. The event is open to all ECAC member schools, which includes schools from Maine to North Carolina. Van Deusen, a junior from Bear, DE (Glasgow HS) who became Delaware's first ever Colonial Athletic Association champion last week when she won the one-meter diving championship, placed third overall Friday at the ECAC meet with 448.40 points. A first-year transfer from Syracuse University, Van Deusen's finish was the best ever for a UD women's swimmer at the ECAC meet. Boston University's Stacey Gallagher captured the women's three-meter title with 459.40 points to outdistance runner-up Ashley Good of Rhode Island with 448.75 points. Van Deusen was third followed by Boston College's Katelyn Cox, Boston University's Bridget Nord, Erin Moore of Rider, Megan Barnett of Navy, and Kristilee Schubert of Stony Brook. A total of 23 divers competed. In the men's section, Larks (Mt. Pleasant HS/Wilmington, DE) led Delaware with a sixth place finish as he totalled 233.05 points. His finish was the Hens' best since Brian Aston placed sixth in the one-meter event at the ECAC meet in 1998. Bucknell's Adam Freeman won the event with 289.45 points followed by Victor Paguia of Boston University, Baron Poitier of New York University, Rob Baier of Rider, Michael Goman of Marist, Larks, Joe Grey of New York University, and Dustin Boone of UMBC among the 11 competitors.
