Day Three Final Results February 24, 2002 • George Mason University Diver Julie Van Deusen Wins Delaware's First Ever CAA Title; Three More Records Fall as Hens Place Fourth in Team Standings
FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team finished fourth overall and the Blue Hen men were ninth overall at the third and final day of the 17th annual Colonial Athletic Association championships Sunday at George Mason University's Aquatic and Fitness Center. On the women's side, host George Mason, led by individual point champion sophomore Lauren Stinnett, led from start to finish to capture its first ever CAA women's title, outlasting defending champion James Madison 668 to 519. William & Mary was third followed by Delaware, UNC Wilmington, Towson, Old Dominion, Davidson, and Drexel. In the men's section, UNC Wilmington also won its first ever CAA title with 680.5 points, outdistancing three-time defending champion James Madison with 567. George Mason was third followed by William & Mary, Towson, Drexel, Old Dominion, Davidson, and Delaware. Towson's Aaron Krause won the individual point total with 60 points. Highlighting the final day of action for the Delaware women was diver Julie Van Deusen (Hill School/Bear, DE), who became the first Blue Hen athlete to capture a CAA individual title in any sport in school history when she won the one-meter diving event with a score of 268.50. She had also placed second in the three-meter diving event on Friday. Also for the Hen women, Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) placed third in the 1,650 freestyle in a time of 17:17.21, Jill Fitzgerald (Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA) was third in the 100 freestyle (52.80, .02 off the school record), the 400 freestyle relay team of Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE), Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE), Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, MA HS), and Fitzgerald was fourth with a school record time of 3:31.99, Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) was fifth in the 200 butterfly with a school record time of 2:06.08, Kim Fields (Severna Park, MD HS) was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:20.31), Haus was sixth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:21.3), and Sandy Stephens was ninth in the 200 breaststroke, breaking her own school record with a time of 2:22.06. Haus was Delaware's top swimmer for the meet, placing 11th in the individual point race with 44. The Delaware women set nine school records during the three-day meet, including four in the relay events. For the Delaware men, Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) was sixth in the three-meter diving event (397.90), his second top 10 finish of the meet. The 400 freestyle relay team of Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS), Robert Frey (East/West Chester, PA), Pete Murphy (Rancocas Valley/Mt. Holly, NJ) and Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) placed seventh overall in a time of 3:12.19. AGATE: Final Women's Team Standings: 1. George Mason - 668; 2. James Madison - 519; 3.
