Petry Sets School Record But Hens Fall

NEWARK, DE -- Freshman Meghan Petry (New Providence, NJ/Villa Walsh) set a school record in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:23.97 but it was not enough as the West Chester men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon at Rawstrom Natatorium in Newark.

The West Chester men (2-0) won by a score of 129-97, while the Golden Rams' women (2-0) defeated Delaware (1-3), 139-102.

Petry, who broke the previous 1000 freestyle record of 10:25.10 set by Nancy Davis, also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:09.06. However, except for the 400 freestyle relay, West Chester won all of the other events, as Megan Straehle, Melissa DeBellis, and Lisa Mentzer were all double winners.

The West Chester men won their 18th straight meet as Matt Matys, Grant Clark, and Todd Albert each took two events. Lavar Larks (Wilmington, DE/Mt. Pleasant) won both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events for the Blue Hens (2-2), and Mike Gallaher won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.46.

The Delaware men's and women's teams will travel to Drexel Saturday, Nov. 18 for a 1 p.m. meet.
