Petry, Stephens Set UD Records But Hens Fall to Tigers

TOWSON, MD -- Towson University ended years of frustration against the University of Delaware by sweeping the Blue Hens in an America East men's and women's swimming and diving dual meet Saturday afternoon.

The Towson men downed Delaware 151-90 while the Tiger women won the last event of the day to post a 124-119 victory over Delaware.

The Blue Hen men lost their seventh straight dual to fall to 2-7 and dropped their meet with Towson for the first time after 13 straight wins. The Delaware women fell to 3-6 and lost to Towson for just the second time in 27 meetings and for the first time since 1977-78.

In the women's meet, Towson placed first and second in the 400 freestyle to overcome a 12-point deficit and post the victory. Delaware captured seven first place finishes led by freshman Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ), who captured three events and sophomore Megan Rodgers (Lower Merion/Ardmore, PA), who won two events.

Petry won the 1,000 freestyle (10:20.81), 500 freestyle (5:02.31), and 200 butterfly, breaking her own school record (2:09.26) with a time of 2:08.15 in the 200 butterfly. Rodgers won both the one-meter dive (217.35) and three-meter dive (218.17) and freshman Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE) swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay (4:03.37), won the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:25.93, breaking the old mark of 2:26 by Donna Brockson in 1987, and placed second in the 200 individual medley (2;12.57).

Junior Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay and placed second in both the 200 freestyle (1:57.61) and 100 freestyle (55.19). Kristin Trinkhaus won three events and Allison Paul won two to lead Towson.

In the men's meet, Delaware captured five first place finishes as junior Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS) and sophomore Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) each won two events.

Kahner captured the 1,000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle (4:57.75) while Larks won both diving events, taking the one-meter with 256.80 points and the three-meter event with 240.7. Also taking home a first place finish was senior Mike Gallaher (Peabody/West Peabody, MA), who won the 200 freestyle (1:45.56).

Also for the Hens, sophomore Adam Keim (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) placed second in both diving events while sophomore Rick Dressel (McKean/Wilmington, DE) was second in the 200 butterfly (2:00.63) and third in the 50 freestyle (22.76).

The Blue Hens were competing in their first meet since Dec. 21. Both Blue Hen teams will close out their home season next Saturday vs. Loyola.
