SEWELL, NJ -- Led by freshman
Meghan Petry, the University of Delaware women's
swimming and diving team placed eighth at the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Championships Saturday at the
Gloucester County College Pool.
Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ)
became the first ECAC champion in Delaware women's swimming
history on the final day as she captured the 1,650 freestyle
in a school record time of 16:54.35 to lead the Blue
Hens.
Petry earned four All-East citations and
set four school records during the three-day meet to lead
Delaware to an eighth place team finish with 158 points.
East Carolina won the team title with 554 points followed by
Boston College, UMBC, Central Connecticut, Army, Navy, and
New Hampshire. UMBC won the men's team title. Delaware's
eighth place finish was its highest at the meet since the
ECAC started sponsoring the meet in 1992-93. Delaware did
not compete in the men's division.
Petry won the 1,650 freestyle in a time
of 16:54.35 to break her own record of 17:02.99 set earlier
this season. Later in the day she earned All-East honors by
placing eighth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.63.
She broke her own school record with a time of 2:06.24 in
the preliminaries. Petry went on to swim a leg of the 400
freestyle relay team that placed 16th in a time of 3:47.52.
She was joined by Kathryn Fryer (Severna Park, MD
HS), Nicole Gibson (West Potomac/Alexandria, VA) ,
and Katie Poore (Glasgow/Newark, DE) .
Also leading the Blue Hens on the final
day was sophomore Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark,
DE) who earned her third All-East honors of the meet with a
fourth place finish in the 200 breaststroke, breaking her
own school record with a time of 2:23.08. Earlier in the
meet, she earned All-East honors by placing third in the 100
breaststroke and sixth in the 200 medley relay.
Also for the Hens, Emily Mitchell
(Arundel/Crofton, MD) was 10th in the 1,650 freestyle
(17:39.97) and 24th in the 200 butterfly (2:11.43), Fryer
was 18th in the 200 backstroke (2:12.15), Denise
Duncheskie (Gwynedd Mercy Academy/Oreland, PA) was 20th
in the 200 backstroke (2:12.82), Megan Rodgers (Lower
Merion/Ardmore, PA) was 23rd in the one-meter dive (172.35
pts.), Poore was 28th in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.89),
Gibson was 29th in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.17), Meagan
Marshall (Thomas Jefferson/Frederick, MD) was 32nd in
the 200 backstroke (2:15.78), Jill Fitzgerald
(Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA) was 33rd in the 100
freestyle (55.00), and Jennifer Haus (St.
Mark's/Newark, DE) was 50th in the 100 freestyle
(56.01).
