SEWELL, NJ - University of
Delaware athletes picked up four Top 15 finishes during the
second day of action at the Eastern College Athletic
Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at
Gloucester County College Pool.
After two days of action, Delaware is
eighth in the team standings with 103 points. East Carolina
leads the team standings with 371 points.
Sophomore Sandy Stephens (St.
Mark's/Newark, DE) earned All-East honors with a third place
finish in the 100 breaststroke while junior Kathryn Fryer
(Severna Park, MD HS) placed 12th the 100 butterfly. In
addition, Blue Hen relays had two top 10 and All-East
finishes as the 200 medley relay of Meghan Marshall,
Stephens, Fryer, and Jill Fitzgerald was sixth
and the 800 freestyle relay team of Meghan Petry, Fryer,
Emily Mitchell, and Jennifer Haus was seventh. No
Blue Hen men competed on Friday.
Stephens, the America East runner-up in
the 100 breaststroke last week at the University of Maine,
swam to a third place time of 1:05.67, just over a second
slower than winner Kristen Zeimetz of New Hampshire
(1:04.26). East Carolina's Samantha Perry was second.
Stephens also placed 21st in the 100 butterfly
(59.92).
Fryer, who placed 17th in the 100
butterfly a year at ECAC's, placed 12th this year in a time
of 58.46, just .28 seconds off her school record time.
Marist's Erin McGrath won the race in a time of 57.29. Fryer
also placed 20th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.57).
The 200 medley relay team placed sixth in
a time of 1:50.59 behind winner East Carolina (1:46.03)
while the 800 freestyle relay team was seventh in a time of
7:49.09. Central Connecticut won the event in a time of
7:38.19.
Also for Delaware, Denise
Duncheskie (Gwynedd Mercy/Oreland, PA) placed 25th in
the 100 backstroke (1:02.56), Nicole Gibson (West
Potomac/Alexandria, VA) was 27th in the 100 breaststroke
(1:10.39), and Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) was 41st in the
200 freestyle (1:59.43).
