Petry Earns All-East Honors; 2nd in 500 Freestyle

SEWELL, NJ -- University of Delaware freshman Meghan Petry highlighted the first day of action at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships by placing second in the women's 500 freestyle Thursday.

The four-day meet, being held at the Gloucester County College Pool, continues through Sunday. The meet includes all the top Division I men's and women's teams in the East.

Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) was Delaware's top performer on the day as she placed second in the 500 freestyle, breaking the school record with a time of 4:58.53. Petry, who has set six school records in her first collegiate season, broke the old record of 5:00.36 set by Nancy Davis in 1994-95. Petry's time was just six seconds slower than champion Tammie Repass of Central Connecticut, who set a pool record with a time of 4:52.34.

With her second place finish, Petry earns All-East honors. Her second place finish is the best for a UD women's swimmer since Davis placed second in both the 50 freetyle and 100 freestyle at the 1997 ECAC meet.

Also for the Blue Hens on Thursday, the 400 medley relay team of Erin Colbert, Sandy Stephens, Petry, and Jill Fitzgerald placed 12th overall with a time of 4:06.59 and sophomore Megan Rodgers (Lower Merion/Ardmore, PA) placed 12th in the women's three-meter diving event with a score of 334.95 points. Drexel's Brigid Mitchell won the event with a score of 477.85. The diving events for the ECAC championships are being held at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
