America East Swimming & Diving Championships - Final Day

Delaware Men Swimmers Capture Third Straight America East Crown; Blue Hen Women Place 4th

 

ORONO, ME -- Tom Maday captured the 200 breaststroke and Brian Aston and Luke Schenck each picked up second place finishes as the University of Delaware men's swimming and diving team captured its third straight America East team title Sunday night at the University of Maine's Wallace Pool.

Christine Johannsen placed second in the 200 backstroke to lead the Delaware women's team to a fourth place finish.

The Delaware men, led by America East Coach of the Year John Hayman, won an unprecedented third straight team title with 786 points to edge runner-up Drexel (738 points). In the women's meet, New Hampshire won its second straight team title, downing Boston University (652), Northeastern (540), and Delaware (470.5) in the eight-team field.

Maday, a junior, swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events for the second straight year and upped his career conference title mark to five as he won the 200 breaststroke in 2:04.40, breaking his own school record. Also for the Hens, Aston placed second in the three- meter dive (467.85 pts.), Schenck was second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:00.36), Jim Reichart was third in the 1,650 freestyle (16:21.68), and Ian Miller was third in the 100 freestyle (47.57). New Hampshire's Ian Smith was named the Outstanding Swimmer of the meet.

Johannsen won the 200 backstroke in 2:09.47 to lead the Blue Hen women. Also for the Hens, Jennifer Haus placed third in the 100 freestyle (53.87) and swam a leg of the sixth place 400 freestyle relay with Danielle Hack, Kathryn Fryer, and Amanda Stouffer in 3:41.53. New Hampshire's Kristen Zeimetz was named the Outstanding Swimmer.
