Lead Hens to Upset of Undefated
Tigers
NEWARK, DE -- The Blue Hen men won
easily and the UD women pulled of a big upset as the
University of Delaware swimming and diving teams swept
Towson University in an America East dual meet Saturday at
Rawstrom Pool.
The Delaware men (5-1, 2-0 America East)
won their third straight meet by a score of 148-85 as
Bryan Kahner (Jericho/Jericho, NY) won two events.
The Delaware women (5-1, 2-0) also won their third straight
meet with a 137-109 verdict as Jennifer Haus (St.
Mark's/Newark, DE) collected three first place finishes. The
meet was the final home dual meet of the season for the Blue
Hens, who close out the regular season next Saturday at
Loyola. Delaware will host the America East championships
Feb. 18-20.
The Towson men fell to 6-4 with their
third straight loss while the Tiger women suffered their
first setback of the season to fall to 8-1. Towson is
coached by former UD standout Patrick Mead.
The Delaware women won the first five
events of the meet to take control and post the victory,
their 22nd straight win since 1978-79 over Towson.
Haus, a sophomore, was a triple winner
for the Blue Hens, winning the 1,000 freestyle in 10:32.98,
the 100 freestyle in 54.77, and the 500 freestyle in
5:13.47. Also posting victories for the Blue Hens were
sophomore Kathryn Fryer (Severna Park/Severna Park,
MD) in the 200 freestyle (1:59.57), senior Amanda
Stouffer (O.J. Roberts/Spring City, PA) in the 50
freestyle (25.46), sophomore Jenna Blongiewicz
(Andover/Andover, MA) in the 200 individual medley
(2:14.67), Tanya Mainville (Cheshire/Cheshire, CT) in
the 3-meter dive (257.40), and senior Lisa Dillinger
(Pallotti/Crofton, MD) in the 200 backstroke
(2:08.93).
Dillinger also set a school record in the
100 backstroke in swimming a leg of the winning 400 medley
relay with Fryer, Stouffer, and Danielle Hack
(Susquehanna/Harrisburg, PA). Dillinger's time of 59.69
broke her own school record of 59.82 set last
season.
In the men's race, Delaware improved to
13-0 all-time vs. Towson as Kahner led the way with
victories in 1,000 freestyle (9:50.82) and 200 butterfly
(2:04.52).
Also posting victories for the UD men
were Michael Gallaher (Peabody/West Peabody, MA) in
the 200 freestyle (1:46.49), senior Tom Maday (Great
Mills/Lexington Park, MD) in the 200 individual medley
(2:01.51), David Troskey (William Penn HS) in the
1-meter dive (275.92); Ian Miller (Dover/Dover, PA)
in the 100 freestyle (49.37), Brian Aston
(Cheshire/Cheshire, CT) in the 3-meter dive (297.82), and
Brian McGillen (St. Mark's HS) in the 200 backstroke
(2:02.82).
The Hens also won the 400 medley relay as
the team of Neumann Marlett (Belvidere/Belvidere,
NJ), Maday, Brian Salcetti (Landon/Potomac, MD), and
Scott Muety (St. Charles/St. Charles, IL) swam to a
winning time of 3:39.18.
