NEWARK, DE -- Junior midfielders Dana Rodgers and Kasie Shover (right) scored their first goals of the season, but couldn’t rescue the Blue Hen women’s soccer team from a 3-2 defeat at the hands of UNC Wilmington on Friday evening at the UD Mini-Stadium.
Striker Kelly Renkin scored two goals, including the game-winner with seven minutes left in regulation, for the Seahawks (8-5-1, 4-3-0 CAA), who won for the fourth time in five matches.
The Seahawks’ Jenny Cauble struck first blood, scoring in the 20th minute on a corner kick by Renkin. But Rodgers equalized just seven minutes later, when she collected a Kendall Lytwynec pass in the box and booted home the first goal of her career. Shover kept up the Blue Hen momentum, beating UNCW’s Emily Pratt from 10 yards out to give Delaware a 2-1 edge at the 40:23 mark.
But Wilmington, which out-shot Delaware 15-4 and controlled the flow of play throughout, seized control quickly in the second half. As Renkin made a run toward the box in the 49th minute, her defender fell over and gave her an open lane to the goal. Renkin capitalized on the slip-up to knot the score at two.
The teams exchanged possession in the muddy midfield for half an hour, as neither side could generate many good chances. But in the 83rd minute, Renkin settled a corner on the left edge of the box and fired home her ninth goal of the season, sending the Seahawks home with the victory.
With its fifth setback in six games, Delaware fell to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in the conference. The Hens lost for just the second time in seven all-time meetings with UNC-Wilmington. Four of the team's five CAA losses have come by one goal.
Junior keeper E.J. Goldman made five saves for Delaware, which took its fewest shots since a season-opening loss to national power Virginia. The Hens haven't out-shot an opponent since a Sept. 9 win over Seton Hall.
Delaware will look to get back on track Sunday afternoon, when the Hens host Georgia State at 1 p.m.
