NEW YORK, NY -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team, led by 18th-year head coach Scott Grzenda (right), is ranked No. 15 in the Mid-Atlantic region in Soccer Buzz magazine’s latest weekly poll, which was released Monday.
The Blue Hens (3-1, 0-0 CAA), who have won three straight matches, share the 15th spot with Loyola (MD) and fellow Colonial Athletic Association contender George Mason. Delaware last appeared in the Mid-Atlantic poll on Oct. 23, 2006, when the Hens were ranked 13th.
UD, which shut out Seton Hall, Marshall, and Saint Joseph’s last week, has appeared in the regional poll at least once in each of the last four years. The Hens achieved their highest-ever ranking in 2005, when they finished the season at No. 9 in the 47-team region.
This week’s Mid-Atlantic poll included three other CAA teams: No. 6 James Madison, No. 10 William & Mary, and No. 11 Old Dominion. Hofstra, meanwhile, moved up to No. 3 in the Northeast region. Virginia, which topped Delaware 4-0 in the Hens’ season-opener, remained at No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic, while North Carolina leads the national rankings.
During their three-game winning streak, the Blue Hens have outscored opponents 10-0 and averaged 19.7 shots per game. E.J. Goldman and Annie Bevan, who have shared minutes at keeper, haven’t allowed a goal in 281:30, while senior midfielder Emily Sammis leads the team with three goals and six points on the season.
The Hens visit the region’s 12th-ranked team, Georgetown, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
