NEWARK, DE -- Sophomore Lisa Parsons (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA) broke a 1-1 tie with a goal early in the second half and junior Lindsay Boyd (Abington/Abington, PA; at right) scored twice in a three-minute span late in the game to lead the University of Delaware women’s soccer team to a 4-1 non-league victory over Seton Hall Sunday afternoon at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Blue Hens, who defeated Saint Joseph’s 1-0 in their season opener Friday night, are now off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2003 as they defeated Seton Hall (1-1) for the first time after the two teams played to ties each of the last two seasons.
Delaware, which also got a goal from Caitlyn Germain (St. Peter-Marian/Auburn, MA) in the first half, posted its highest goal total since defeating Temple 4-0 last Sept. 9 as it outshot the Pirates 19-10 and held a commanding 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Hens have now won six straight home games at Delaware Mini-Stadium since last season.
Seton Hall needed just five minutes and 31 seconds to open the scoring as Katie Herr grounded a shot from the right side into the left side of the goal from 25 yards out past Bonnie Mills (Caravel/Bear, DE). Mills posted seven saves for the game.
But the game belonged to the Blue Hens after that. Germain scored her second goal in two games when she rebounded a loose ball following a corner kick and scored from 10 yards out past Seton Hall goalkeeper Amanda Becker (eight saves) to knot the score at 1-1 with 4:37 left in the opening half. Germain, who led the team with five goals last season, left the game in the second half with an ankle injury after a collision with Becker in front of the net. Her playing status will be updated early this week.
Delaware took the lead for good at 2-1 just two minutes and 35 seconds into the second stanza as Parsons took a short pass from freshman Melissa Kilker (Pennsbury/Morrisville, PA) and scored her first career goal from 10 yards out.
The Hens kept the pressure on and added two insurance goals by Boyd in the final six minutes of play. Boyd ripped a shot from 25 yards out just above the outstretched arms of Becker with 5:55 left to play for a 3-1 lead and just two minutes and 23 seconds later took a crossing pass from Kilker and deposited the ball into the Seton Hall net for the final goal of game. Boyd has now scored eight career goals.
Delaware will next be in action this weekend when it travels to Huntington, WV to take part in the Marshall University Tournament. The Hens will play Morehead State Sept. 1 at 4:30 p.m. and Marshall Sept. 3 at 2 p.m.
