NEWARK, DE -- Jess Bendzlowicz (at right) scored her first goal as a Blue Hen 25:17 into the first half in leading the University of Delaware women’s soccer team to a 1-1 tie against Northeastern University on Friday evening at windy Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Bonnie Mills made five saves for the Blue Hens, while Annie Peterofsky made four saves for the Huskies.
Delaware (8-6-3, 3-5-1 CAA) took the lead in the 27th minute when Bendzlowicz drove home a shot from 20 yards out near the right sideline. The goal was the first by a Blue Hen other than Kasie Shover since a 4-2 loss to William & Mary on September 24.
Northeastern (8-5-3, 4-3-2 CAA) tied the game with only 10:22 remaining in the second half when Caitlin Whelan scored on a direct kick from 20 yards out from the left of the Blue Hen goal. Whelan drove the ball around a wall of Delaware defenders and past Mills to knot the game at one.
Both teams had chances to win in overtime, none better than when Delaware’s Lindsay Boyd put a rebound just over the crossbar less than three minutes into the first extra session.
Before the game, Delaware honored its three seniors Boyd, Mills and Lauren Petchel.
The Hens will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Hofstra for a 1 p.m. game against the Pride.
