NEWARK, DE-- Freshman Caitlyn Germain (right) scored with 3:10 left in the second overtime to give the Bllue Hens a 3-2 victory over Northern Iowa in the second game of the Delaware Blue Hen Adidas Classic on Friday night.

The game-winning play was set up by a long sideline pass from Shelby Lawrence. Germain gathered up the ball on the left sideline and went in alone on goal from 25 yards out, slipping the game-winner past Northern Iowa goalkeeper Krista Thorley. Germain also had an assist on Shannon Alger’s first goal of the season, which gave the Hens’ a 2-1 lead early in the second half.

The Hens (3-1-2) carried play for much of the evening, outshooting the Panthers by a 31-14 margin. Despite the offensive attack, the Panthers (1-6-0) were kept in the game by an outstanding game from Thorley, who made 11 saves, most of which were from close range. Lindsey Shover made two saves for the Hens.

Delaware held a seemingly safe 2-1 lead late into the game, but with only 3:45 remaining Lindsey Daugherty took a cross pass from Brooke Orcutt on the left side and buried the equilizer. The Panthers then outshot the Hens 3-0 in the first overtime period before Germain’s goal won it for Delaware.

The game marked the first time this season that Caitlyn Germain did not lead the Hens in shots. Allison Kendro led in shots with six, including her first goal of the season to open the scoring 33:58 into the first half.

The win was the 150th in the career of head coach Scott Grzenda, the only coach in program history.

In the first game of the evening, Georgetown defeated Towson 3-0, on goals by Shara McNeill, Chrissy Skogen and Alexandra Hardy.

The Classic continues on Sunday with Northern Iowa facing Towson at 11:30 and Georgetown plays the host Blue Hens at 2 p.m.
