NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team secured a spot in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 2-0 win over UNC Wilmington Thursday night at chilly Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Blue Hens (9-5-3, 6-3-1 CAA) took the lead only 10:14 into the game when Alli D’Amico scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. The shot came from 14 yards out in the middle of the field, and deflected off the left post before denting the back of the net.
The Hens added an insurance tally just over 10 minutes remaining. Caitlyn Germain (right) broke in on Seahawks’ goalie Rachael Wilson, who initially stopped the attempt about 10 yards in front of the goal, but the ball bounced high in the air, and landed a few feet from the goalline and rolled the rest of the way in.
Wilson kept the Seahawks (7-10-1, 3-6-1 CAA) close, posting five saves in a losing effort. Reigning CAA Player of the Week Lindsey Shover continued her stellar play, making five saves for her second shutout in three games. She now has 19 for her career, placing her one behind Sheena Hunter for second place in school history.
The Blue Hens remain in third place in the conference can still host a first round game in the conference tournament pending the outcome of the weekend’s games. The Blue Hens are 4-0-1 in their last five matches and have allowed only one goal in that stretch.
