NEWARK, DE-- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team used two goals in each half to power past the Temple Owls 4-0 in the Hens’ home opener Friday evening at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
The Hens (2-1-2) dominated play throughout most of the first half, out shooting the Owls by a 13-3 margin. The first goal came 36:14 into the game when freshman Caitlyn Germain set up senior Mary Beth Creed, who drilled a shot from 15 yards past Temple goalie Tiffany Kasunich for her first goal of the year. Only 45 seconds later, Melissa Kunisky’s arcing lob from just inside the midfield line eluded Kasunich, giving the Hens a two goal lead from which they never looked back. The goal was Kunisky’s first in her career at Delaware.
In the second half, the Hens continued to carry the play. Sophomore Kendall Lytwynec put home a shot from just outside the right post with just under 15 minutes left to play. Junior Lauren Petchell capped the scoring by putting in a shot off of a corner kick by Melissa Kunisky. The assist gave Kunisky (right) her first career three-point game.
Lindsey Shover and Bonnie Mills each made one save to split the shutout for the Hens. The shutout was the second on the year, and the 16th of Shover’s career. Tiffany Kasunich made six saves for the Owls (0-4-0), who were shutout for the fourth consecutive game and have yet to score a goal this season.
Each of the Hens’ goal scorers recorded their first of the season. The win was also 149th in the career of head coach Scott Grzenda.
The Blue Hens will return to action next Friday when they host Northern Iowa hosting in the Delaware Blue Hen Adidas Classic. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at the Delaware Mini-Stadium.
