NEWARK, DE -- Saturday was senior day at Delaware Mini-Stadium, but a pair of underclassmen stole the show.

Freshman Caitlyn Germain (right) posted the first two-goal game of her career and sophomore Emily Sammis scored her second goal in four games to lead the University of Delaware women’s soccer team past Georgia State, 3-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association match on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon at Delaware Mini-Stadium.

Delaware opened the scoring at 29:17 when a Melissa Kunisky shot through a screen deflected off of multiple players before being put home by Germain. The goal was Germain’s fourth of the season, tying her for the team lead with Alli D’Amico.

Just over 12 minutes later, Germain took sole possession of the goal scoring lead when she re-directed a Melissa Kunisky indirect kick past Panther goalkeeper Alexa Pasquarelli.

The Hens added to their lead only 1:38 into the second half when Sammis’ shot was initially saved by Pasquarelli but deflected high over her head and into the net. It was Sammis’ second tally of the season, following her game winner with only 1:24 remaining at George Mason last Friday.

The Hens dominated throughout most of the afternoon, holding the Panthers without a shot in the first half.

Lindsey Shover made four saves in the second half to earn the shutout for the Hens. The shutout was Shover’s 20th of her career, tying her with Sheena Hunter for second place in school history.

The win gave Delaware (10-5-3, 7-3-1 CAA) its best record since joining the CAA, while the seven conference wins are also the most Delaware has achieved in any conference in program history.

Prior to the game, the Hens’ nine seniors (Shannon Alger, Mary Beth Creed, Liz Friedman, Allison Kendro, Jennifer Krepps, Kunisky, Shelby Lawrence, Lindsay Novotny and Shover) were honored. All nine then started the match, including Novotny, who has missed the majority of the season with a knee injury.

Delaware will return to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the Hens host a first round match in the CAA tournament. The Hens’ opponent is yet to be determined based upon the results of other games this weekend.
