NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team lost a tough home match against Georgetown University 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Delaware Blue Hen Adidas Classic.
The game marked the first time this year that the Hens (3-2-2) have been shutout, and is their first loss since their 2-1 defeat at the hands of North Carolina State on September 4.
The game was evenly matched for most of the first half, until Georgetown’s Alexandra Hardy took a long lob pass from the left sideline and fired the shot past Delaware goalkeeper Lindsey Shover 28:07 into the contest. Throughout the rest of the first half, the Hens had a few chances to tie the game up, the best coming right before halftime when Lindsay James’ header off of a corner kick eluded Georgetown goalie Jade Higgins, but the ball hit the crossbar just as time expired. Higgins made five saves to post the shutout for the Hoyas, while Shover made four saves for the Hens.
Nearly 20 minutes into the second half, the Hoyas capped the scoring when Shante Cofield took a pass from Sara Jordan on the left side of the box and fired a shot right under the crossbar for the goal.
In the first game of the day, Towson defeated Northern Iowa 1-0 on a first half goal by Jamie Swears.
The all-tournament team, as selected by the coaches at the conclusion of the final game included Georgetown midfielder Lindsey Appezatto, Delaware midfielder Mary Beth Creed, Georgetown back Ashley Darcy, Northern Iowa forward Shannon Dechant, Delaware forward Caitlyn Germain, Georgetown midfileder Alexandra Hardy, Towson back Meghan Labiak, Towson midfielder Kristin McHugh, Georgetown midfielder Shara McNeill, Delaware back Lauren Petchel and Northern Iowa goalkeeper Krista Thorley.
