DATE: September 2, 2005

Cary, NC-- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team earned a hard
fought 1-1 tie against Elon University Friday evening in the first round of the
Summit Hospitality Invitational hosted by North Carolina State.

The Hens (1-0-2) overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit for their second consecutive
tie. Delaware will finish up play at the tournament Sunday when they take on
host North Carolina State at 2:30 p.m.

Elon (0-1-1) took the lead 25 minutes into the match when Kelly Constantino
put in a header shot off a pass from Katie Persichini. The Hens came within
inches of tying the game 15 minutes later when Allison Kendro’s header hit a
post and deflected away from the Elon goal.

Twelve minutes into the second half Delaware tied the game on senior Shelby
Lawrence’s first goal of the season. Lawrence gathered in a loose ball and
slipped it past Elon goalie Liz Johnson for the third goal of her career.

The Hens had several opportunites to win the game in overtime, outshooting
Elon 8-3 in the extra periods. Caitlyn Germain hit the post with only 21 seconds
remaining in the first overtime, the second time the Hens found iron on the day.

Germain, a freshman, led Delaware in shots with seven, and has now led the
team in shots in all three matches. Just under two minutes into the second
overtime period, Jennifer Krepps took a penalty kick for the Hens but was
stopped by Liz Johnson.

Johnson finished with eight saves for Elon while Lindsey Shover and Bonnie Mills
split the netminding duties for the Hens, making two and three saves
respectively.
