NEWARK, DE-- The University of Delaware women’s soccer team defeated the visiting Drexel Dragons, 1-0, in the opening of Colonial Athletic Association play for both teams Saturday at Delaware Mini-Stadium.
Sophomore Alli D’Amico (Manasquan, NJ/Red Bank Catholic - at right) pulled a loose ball from a scrum directly in front of the Drexel goal and beat Dragons goalkeeper Kaitlin Bond for the only goal of the game at 108:40.
D’Amico’s goal marked the second straight win the Hens have earned in double-overtime, following Caitlyn Germain’s goal in the second overtime period against Northern Iowa last Friday.
The Hens (4-2-2, 1-0 CAA) carried the play throughout most of the afternoon, outshooting the Dragons (5-3-1, 0-1) 29-11 and holding a 14-2 edge in corner kicks. The majority of the game was played on the Drexel half of the field, but the Hens were unable to beat Bond until D’Amico’s goal in the second overtime.
Bond made 11 saves to hold Drexel in the game, including a diving stop on Delaware’s Emily Sammis with only nine minutes remaining in regulation. Germain led the offensive onslaught with nine shots, many of which forced Bond to make difficult saves.
The Dragons best scoring chance came near the end of the first half when Katie Kane’s shot from 10 yards seemed to be headed toward the goal before being knocked away by a diving save by Delaware goalie Lindsey Shover. Shover posted three saves for the Hens in notching the shutout. Shover now has three shutouts on the season, and 17 for her career.
The Hens will return to action this Friday when they travel to Northeastern for their first CAA matchup with the Huskies. Game time from Boston is 6 p.m.
