Dodson Wins Men's 5,000 Meters, Somers, Young Lead UD Women at Asics Winthrop Invitational

ROCK HILL, SC- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Asics Winthrop Invitational which took place at the Irwin Belk Winthrop Track Complex on Friday and Saturday.

At the Asics Winthrop Invitational, the Blue Hen men produced 10 top 10 finishes in the two day tournament, led by Brad Dodson who took first place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 14:58. The Delaware women had five top 10 finishes including Rachel Young who posted a fourth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 12.98 meters, a ninth place finish in the discus with a toss of 36.33 meters, and a 16th place finish in the hammer throw with a heave of 38.54 meters.

On the men’s side, Sam MacKenzie finished second in the 800 meter with a time of 1:55.39 and in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:04.53, right behind Dodson, who also took a fourth place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.03 and a seventh place finish in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.00. Will Jurkowski took a fouth place finish in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:02.28, while teammate Matt Guida led the men in the field events with a seventh place finish in the pole vault with a vault of 4.15 meters.

The men’s 4x100 meter relay team took a fifth place finish overall with a time of 43.13, while the 4x400 meter relay notched seventh place with a time of 3:24.05.

On the women’s side, Julia Somers notched fourth place in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:47.10 to lead the Blue Hen women. Paula Green earned a sixth place finish in the 100 meter run with a time of 12.29, while thrower Amanda Marshall took 11th place in the discus with a throw of 36.03 and a 12th place finish in the shot put with a toss of 11.95 meters.

The 4x400 meter relay team took a fourth place finish out of 14 teams with a time of 4:00.54.
