| RICHMOND, VA- The University of Delaware men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the first day of competition at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Virginia Commonwealth University on Friday.
The second and final day of competition will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Each individual champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA East Regionals to be held at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, NC May 26-27.
The Delaware men are currently in sixth place in the team standings with 12 points, trailing leader William & Mary (104), UNC Wilmington (61), Northeastern (35.50), Virginia Commonwealth (28), and James Madison (15.50). George Mason (9) and Georgia State (8) round out the field.
The Blue Hen women are in sixth place in the team standings with seven points, trailing defending champion William & Mary (79), James Madison (41), UNC Wilmington (37), Northeastern (27), and Towson (26). Georgia State (5) and George Mason (5) round our the field.
UNC Wilmington is the defending champion on the men’s side, while William & Mary is the five-time defending champion in the CAA.
On the men’s side, senior Kyle Casella was the top finisher for the Blue Hens with a throw of 169-11 in the hammer. Sophomore Dave Gyurina finished seventh in the javelin with a toss of 158-10, while Dave DiVirgilio took seventh in the pole vault with a jump of 14-01.25 and teammates Chris Martens, Matt Arbaugh, and Matt Guida all took ninth in the pole vault with a leap of 13-07.25. P.J. Meany finished seventh in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 31:55.41 while Kyle Schmid took eighth place in the 5,000 meter run in a time of 15:14.78 and Greg Cantwell took ninth with a time of 15:27.68.
On the women’s side, Julia Somers took sixth place in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 38:34.64, while Rachel Young, who took third in the hammer last year, finished sixth this year with a toss of 143-11. Allison Behrle took eighth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 39:54.77 and Brook Maguire took ninth place in the 5,000 meter with a time of 18:02.98. Stephanie Cronk finished ninth in the hammer with a toss of 134-02.
