Captures Pole Vault at Season -Opening

BRANCH, NJ -- The University of Delaware
men's and women's track and field teams
opened up the 2005 fall season Saturday by
competing at the Monmouth Invitational and
at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina
State.
Delaware
athletes picked up three first place
finishes and two second place performances
at Monmouth while Brad Dodson was the top
finisher at Raleigh, placing second in the
1,500 meters in one of the nation's top
early-season meets.
Dodson was
the Hens' top finisher at Raleigh, placing
second in the 1,500 meters in a time of
3:52.34, the fourth fastest time in that
even in school history. He beat runners
from top programs Duke, DePaul, Virginia,
Georgetown, Syracuse, and North Carolina
for the runner-up finish.
Also at
Raleigh, the 1,600 sprint medley team of
Pat Henry, Scott Vari, Charlie Williams,
and Phil Smiley was 11th in 3:36.33, the 4
x 100 meter relay team of Henry, Jason
Bradley, Vari, and Williams was 15th in
42.98, and the 4 x 400 meter relay group
of Henry, Smiley, Williams, and Dixon was
21st in 3:20.65.
At
Monmouth, Delaware won three events as
Tyler Mayforth won the 10,000 meters in
32;19.90, P.J. Meany won the 5,000 meters
in 15:04.67, and Casey Bennett won the
women's pole vault with a leap of 11-5
3/4.
Placing
second for the Blue Hens were Mike Yost in
the men's hammer (165-2) and Kate Klim in
the women's 3,000 meter steeplechase
(11:37.32) while third place finishers
included Peter Kane in the men's 3,000
meter steeplechase (10:08.04), Kyle Schmid
in the men's 5,000 meters (15:08.71),
Kaitlin McGowan in the women's pole vault
(9-1 1/4), and Colleen Reid in the 3,000
meter steeplechase (12:37.740.
Yost also
placed fourth in the men's discus (149-8),
Matt Harrell was fourth in the men's 5,000
meters (15:12.67), and Will Jurkowski was
fourth in the men's 800 meters (1:59.23).
