Young Wins Discus,
Bennett Breaks Own Pole Vault Record of UD
Women
EWING, NJ -- Freshman Rachel
Young won the discus and shot put and Casey
Bennett broke her own school record in the pole vault to
highlight University of Delaware competitors at the Lion's
Invitational hosted by The College of New Jersey Saturday
afternoon.
The Delaware women posted nine top 10
finishes while the Blue Hen men had seven top 10 finishes
led by a fourth place finish in the javelin (178-9) by
Adam Cianfichi (Cumberland Valley/Boiling Springs,
PA).
Young (Sparta/Sparta, NJ) was Delaware's
only individual champion on the day as she captured the
discus with an ECAC meet qualifying toss of 140-6, just one
inch off the school record. She also placed second in the
shot put with a personal best of 42-8 1/4 and also placed
eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 127-7.
Bennett (Shelton/Shelton, CT) also picked
up a second place finish as she broke her own school record
in the pole vault with a leap of 12-5 1/2, breaking the mark
of 11-5 1/4 set earlier this season. Her mark also qualified
her for the ECAC championships May 13-16 at Yale and for the
NCAA Regionals May 28-29 at the University of
Florida.
Also posting top 10 finishes for the UD
women were Kristen Collins' (Magruder/Gaithersburg,
MD) third place finish in the high jump (5-1), Vicki
Hufnagel (Ellenville/Napanoch, NY) was sixth in the 100
meter hurdles (15.37), Stephanie Cronk
(Boonton/Boonton, NJ) was sixth in the hammer (128-5)
and 10th in the discus (114-7), and Jessica Urbonas
(Rockville/Vernon, CT) was sixth in the discus
(118-11).
For the Delaware men, Scott
Armstrong (Sayreville/South Amboy, NJ) was sixth in the
javelin (174-10), Eric Lehrer (Amity Regional/Orange,
CT) was eighth in the javelin (167-3), Andrew Lynch
(Cardinal O'Hara/Springfield, PA) was eighth in the discus
(127-10), Kevin DuPrey (Lampeter-Strasburg/Strasburg,
PA) was ninth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:56.59),
Ryan Benishake (Ellenville/Ellenville, NY) was ninth
in the hammer (139-4), and Antwain Flowers
(Charter/Wilmington, DE) placed 10th in the 400 meters
(52.17).
