Spring Meet at Three Sites
NEWARK, DE -- The University of
Delaware men's and women's outdoor track and field teams
opened their seasons this weekend competing at meets at the
University of Florida, North Carolina State, and Monmouth
College.
The Delaware women's team competed at the
Florida Relays in Gainesville, FL with four student athletes
in action. Freshman Mandy Stille set two school
records as she placed sixth in the heptathlon with 4,696
points and was 25th in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of
14.71. She broke previous records of 3,684 in the heptathlon
(Linda Mullaney in 1984) and 14.79 in the 100 meter hurdles
(Sheryl Hall in 1994).
Also for the Hens, Casey Bennett
was 16th in the pole vault (10-11 3/4), Kristen
Frustillo was 35th in the 100 meters (12.73), and
Brittany Wright was 42nd in the 400 meters
(1:01.90).
Both the Delaware men and women competed
at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University in
Raleigh, NC. The Blue Hen women had three top 30 finishes as
Kate Klim was 19th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase
(12:18.87), the 4 x 800 meter relay team placed 24th
(10:04.18), and the sprint medley relay team was 26th
(4:17.42).
or the Blue Hen men, Roger Brown
placed 21st in the 100 meters (10.84), the sprint medley
relay team was 21st (3:36.78), and the 4 x 400 meter relay
team placed 22nd (3:19.75).
Both Delaware teams enjoyed the most
success at the Monmouth University Season Opener at West
Long Branch, NJ with 21 top 10 finishes on the men's side
and 12 top 10 finishes on the women's side.
The Delaware men captured three first
place finishes as Mike Yost captured the hammer throw
(167-0), Mike Sadowsky won the 10,000 meters with a
meet record time of 31:08.13 and Patrick Riley won
the 5,000 meters with a meet record time of 14:58.02.
Yost also was second in the discus
(150-2), Peter Kane was second in the 3,000 meter
steeplechase (10:08.32), and Kevin DuPrey was second
in the 10,000 meters (31:52.90). Also for the Hens, John
Morgan was third in both the 800 meters (1:57.14) and
1,500 meters (4:03.03).
Freshman Rachel Young posted the
top finish for the UD women as she placed second in the shot
put (40-8 1/4) while Christine Kowalchuk was third in
the javelin (116-9) and Sari Weissbard was third in
the 5,000 meters (19:06.44).
Three other Blue Hens had multiple top 10
finishes as Kristen Collins was sixth in the long
jump (15-9) and eighth in the high jump (4-11), Elizabeth
Russell was seventh in both the 100 meter hurdles
(16.44) and long jump (15-6 3/4), and Stephanie Cronk
was eighth in the discus (111-5) and 10th in the hammer
(127-2).
