Blue Hen Athletes Win Four Races on the Day

NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware men's and women's outdoor track and field teams competed in meets at Penn State University and Towson University Saturday, picking up four first place finishes on the day.

At the 34th annual Jim Thorpe Meet at Nittany Lion Track in University Park, PA, Delaware athletes picked up two victories as Tyechia Smith captured the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.48 and the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Smith, Erin Gemmill, Daniella Price, and Rachel Schultz won its event with a time of 3:54.25.

Also for the UD women at Penn State, Rubin was third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:09.05) and seventh in the 100 meter hurdles (16.73), Gemmill was third in the 1,500 meters (4:51.79), Schultz was third in the 800 meters (2:19.28), Laura Dietrich was third in the triple jump (34-5), and Reagan Hastings and Laura Mattey tied for third in the pole vault (10-0). Elizabeth Russell had an outstanding all-around performance, placing fourth in the long jump (16-6), sixth in the high jump (4-11), eighth in the 100 meter hurdles (17.07), and 10th in the 200 meters (27.21).

In the men's section, Delaware was third in the team standings with 32 points behind host Penn State (182) and Army (120). The Hens had seven top five finishes as Nick Riordan was second in the triple jump (42-0), Jerome Holder was second in the 110 meter hurdles (14.80), the 4 x 400 meter relay team of Holder, John Morgan, Brandon Nesbitt, and Phil Smiley was third (3:23.33), Nesbitt was third in the 400 meter hurdles (56.02), Morgan was third in the 800 meters (1:53.54), and Smiley was fifth in the 400 meter hurdles (58.43).

At the non-scoring Towson Open, Delaware athletes picked up two victories as Scott Armstrong won the men's javelin (170-6) and Dave Finneran captured the men's 5,000 meters in 15:27.17. Also for the UD men, Joe Patson was second in the hammer (141-7) and Pat Boettcher was second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:01.44).

Leading the Blue Hen women were Lisa Salvatore, who placed fourth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:57.00, and Colleen Reid, who placed fifth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:59.96.
